Alfreton firm is fastest growing in the country
AN online phone retailer which began life in a former butcher's shop has been named as one of the fastest-growing businesses in the UK.
Derby County shirt sponsor, BuyMobilePhones.net, which is based at Alfreton, is top in the Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100.
The league table ranks the 100 privately-owned companies which have the fastest-growing sales over the last three years.
Over that period, BuyMobilePhones.net grew its sales by 340 per cent.
The company, which sells more than 80,000 phone contracts a year, has seen sales rise from £288,000 in 2006 to £24.5 million in 2009.
The business was founded by Paul Sisson in 1997, and had a chain of 14 shops dotted around Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.
The first shop was a former butcher's in Alfreton.
In 2003, it made the transition from a high street retailer to an online business and moved to Turnpike Business Park.
In the past two years, it has doubled its staff from 30 to 60 and also expanded into neighbouring premises.
Mr Sisson said: "I'm delighted with the growth of the company and we have come a long way since we began 13 years ago.
"There are a number of reasons why we have been successful. We now deal on behalf of more networks and recently started selling for 3 and Vodafone.
"We've also worked hard to get our name out there, for example, with our sponsorship of Derby County and advertising nationally.
"We are featuring high up internet search engines and word of mouth has also proved very powerful.
"Our ambition is to become the first place people go to for a mobile phone and we are on our way to achieving that and we are now rubbing shoulders with some of the big boys."
Mr Sisson said a unique selling point of the business was that the gift incentives offered to customers, such as laptops and electrical goods.
Although the orders are processed at Alfreton, the gifts and phones themselves are distributed from another location.
Mr Sisson said the company was continuing to grow and sales this year stood at around £33 million.
This year the firm also achieved industry recognition with success in two national competitions, winning Best Online Retailer 2010 in both the Mobile Choice Awards and the What Mobile Consumer Awards.
